Seo search engine optimization

Direct Traffic

Direct traffic is common with more established brands, and it simply means
that people are typing in your website address/URL into their browser and
visiting you directly, without finding you on Google or another website first.
Think about sites you go to directly on a regular basis
–,,, etc.

2. Social Traffic

Social traffic is just as it sounds, traffic that was referred to your site from a
social media channel. An example would be that you put a post on your
Facebook page and 300 people clicked your link and visited your website.
Those would be 300 social visitors from Facebook. The same applies to
Twitter, Pinterest, and many others

3. Referral Traffic

Similar to social traffic, referral traffic consists of visitors who come to your
site via a link on another website. This excludes social network websites,
but would include virtually any other site that has a link to your website.
Common sources of referral traffic are guest posts, where you post an
article on someone else’s blog and put a link to your own website in your
bio. People who click that link to come to your site were referral visitors.

4. Organic Traffic

Perhaps the biggest potential for free traffic is organic traffic. This is simply
visits that come to your site from search engines like Google and Bing.
These aren’t paid advertisements, but rather when someone searched a
keyword phrase like “best cycling helmet” and then clicks on your website
from the list of results. Fortunately, there is a system you can follow to
consistently rank for various keywords, which will result in a steady stream
of free, organic visitors to your website.

Niche Site vs. Authority Site

I want to take a moment and explain exactly what that means.
Niche Site Definition
A niche site is any website that is focused in on one particular topic. For
example, would be an example of a fitness niche
site. would be an example of a niche site about
Those sites are quite large, and probably make a ton of revenue, but they
are focused on a particular niche.
So the term “niche site” really refers to the scope of the site, not the size of

Authority Site Definition

Authority sites are actually very similar to niche sites, though when you
hear someone talk about an authority site – it’s usually one that has
become so well established and authoritative in the eyes of both Google
and people in that niche – that it’s considered a true “authority” in the

It may suffice to say that an authority site is usually a just a niche site that
has been very successful.

The authority sites in your niche are the ones that new niche website
creators are aspiring to be one day.

In fact, sites like and others I mention in the video would
fall under my definition of an authority site. They are still focused on a niche
(like fitness) but they’re well established and though of in a high regard
across the online fitness industry.

The End Goal Of Your Website

Before we go any further, it’s important to establish the end goals for your

While you may have some specific personal goals like launching your own
coaching program or physical product, most niche sites have 3 basic

  1.  Build a site that helps the end user find what they are looking for
  2.  Build out more content to get loads of free traffic from Google
  3.  Earn revenue from Display Ads, Amazon Associates or Affiliate Offers

How do you make these goals become reality?

1. Pick Your Niche

Pick the right niche where you can find keywords but also grow over time.

2. Find Keyword

Find Keywords that are low enough in competition that you can rank for
right away.

3. Content Creation

Create compelling content that answer the reader’s query better than

4. On Page SEO

Ensure your on page SEO structure & monetization is in place properly.

5. Link Building

Build links to informational articles to skyrocket both traffic and growth.

How Do Websites Make Money?

There are 4 high level categories of how your website can make money:

1. Display Ads

Display ads are the most common monetization method.
This occurs through advertisers paying for space or clicks on your website. Some
common display ad networks are:

•Adsense – Google’s ad network is probably the most widely used pay-
per-click (PPC) ad network around. There are no traffic minimums to

• – Bing’s answer to Google Adsense. Once approved you
can control ad sizes and placements on your site.

•AdThrive – A premium ad network that requires 100,000 page views
monthly to join. AdThrive will manage placement and optimization of
your ads for you, and typically offers a higher payout than you’d find
with using Adsense or other networks alone

•Mediavine – A very similar concept to AdThrive, but with a lower
threshold for traffic. Must have a minimum of 20,000 monthly
sessions to get approved for MediaVine.

•Private Deals – You can also offer ad space for sale on your site,
charging a fixed amount per month or other negotiated amount with a
private business who may want to have their ad featured in front of
your audience.

2. Affiliate Offers

With affiliate offers, you are essentially selling other people’s stuff.
You sell their items and you get a commission. Can be Amazon Associates or
Private Offers. Amazon Associates is the internet’s largest affiliate program.

Amazon sells over 500M products and has a great degree of trust with
customers, so it’s a fantastic place to start if you’re promoting any kind of
physical product on your site.

There are many other affiliate networks that serve as a marketplace to
connect businesses to publishers (like you) to create affiliate partnerships.
Here are a few of the leading networks:

•Commission Junction

There are many other networks, as well as some businesses who prefer to
run their own affiliate program without using a third party network. In those
cases, you’d need to contact the company directly and ask if they have an
affiliate program.

3. Create Products

I built my own product Long Tail Pro, and sold it to my own audience.
You can do the same by building software or a physical product and selling it on
your site. Here are a few types of products that people use to monetize
their website:

Digital Products:
•Video Course
•Private Membership
•Software as a service (SAAS)

Physical Products:
•Amazon FBA/Physical items

4. Sponsors

Get a large enough following and people will pay you to advertise their
They typically pay by the article and you promote it to your
readers. Here’s a rundown of common sponsorship arrangements:
Paid Blog Posts
This may come in the form of reviewing a product, or product mentions (a
product used in a recipe).

Paid Social Media Feature

Some sponsors will pay you a fee for featuring their product on Social
Media outlets.

Podcast Sponsorship

Podcasters unite! Sponsors will often pay for air time on the beginning or
end of a podcast.

What Is The Long Tail Strategy?

I’m going to give you a little preview of what this “organic formula” is all
about and talk about why focusing on long tail keywords is one of the most
important things you can do to grow your site.

The “Long Tail” of Search

Low Volume, Low Competition Keywords
•Combined makes up 70% of all search traffic
•15% of Google search queries are new, never been searched before

The Long Tail Impact

Low Volume, Low Competition Keywords
•The article below ranks for over 4,600 keywords
•Combine long tails you want to rank for when estimating traffic totals

Why People Ignore Long Tails

High Volume Keywords are in demand by bigger brands
•Ranking for 1 high volume keyword = massive revenue
•Lots of $ to be made when a site ranks for high volume keywords

Organic Traffic Failure

Organic Traffic Failure is often the result of poorly chosen keywords
•Choosing the wrong keywords
•Example: “How to Start a Blog” (Top Pages have 700 Referring
•The Content on this page is great, but I would need to build lots of links

The Long Tail Advantage

Long tail keywords have a few distinct advantages over more competitive “head” terms:

1. Easier to rank for.
2. Faster to see results
3. Offer more traffic opportunities
4. Require less promotional effort
5. Target people further into the buying process

Long Tail Variations

Example Article: 53 Ways to Make Money From Your Website

•Keyword: “How to Make Money From Your Website” (210 LMS)
•Long Tail variations helps this page get 3,000+ page views per month

Variation #4: How to Make Money on Your Website (150 LMS)
Variation #5: Make Money With a Website (250 LMS)
Variation 6-30: There are over 30 additional variations of this keyword

Organic Long Tail Formula

Optimize Content for Long Tail Keywords
•Keywords with less than 1,000 LMS can justify a unique article
•However, some keywords can be included in “Head” term articles
•Several 300 LMS keywords can be combined into one article that has
a target total of 3,000 LMS keyword targets
•You’ll learn strategies to find these keywords in Module 4

iche Selection

In this module, we cover some of the differences in what constitutes anauthority website vs. a niche website, as well as how important followingyour passion is when determining a niche to enter.Authority WebsitesMany times, authority sites cover many niches under one broad topic. Anexample might be broad topic, of course, is sports. However, under that, they deal with NFL football, NBA basketball, and manyothers.
Then, inside of each one of those topics they go even further into a niche. For example – talking about Seattle Mariners baseball or covering the latestinjury news.

Niche Websites

Niche Websites can be authority websites on a narrower topic. Forexample, is all about NFL football.Inside of that site, they also talk about free agents, injuries, specific teamby team coverage and much more – but it’s starting from a tighter niche atthe top – professional football. This doesn’t mean that Pro Football Talk isn’t an authoritative source on theNFL, but it’s a little more niche-focused.

How To Pick A Niche

Picking the right niche is really finding the intersection of several differentfactors. One of the biggest questions is whether or not you need to bepassionate about your topic to enter a particular niche.

The Question Of Passion

Do you need to be passionate about your topic?
• If it’s your first site, it’s in your best interest to pick something youenjoy• It’s easy to push work aside when you aren’t passionate about thetopic• When you are passionate about it, you care about the userexperience• Good User experiences = more time on site & better rankings

The Competitive Landscape

The other 3 circles in our graphic can be loosely organized under the ideaof what the competitive landscape looks like.
Are there other sites doing well in this niche? Are there products to sell in this niche? Is there enough search volume/interest in this niche?
To answer those questions, let’s look at some examples of how you candecide if a niche is too broad, too narrow, or just right:
Broad or Narrow?
Narrow Example 1: Dumbbells Reviews

  • This niche is tailored to a very specific product
  • Niched down enough but can still make revenue
  • Not a ton of growth potential, because it’s just dumbbell

Narrow Example 2: Women Over 50 Fitness

  • Another very specific audience
  • Revenue Opportunities
  • Limited topics, but could have relevance with yoga, meditation

Broad Example 1: Fitness

  • Very broad – targeting all aspects of health & fitness
  • Lots of topics, but heavy competition and revenue
  • With lower levels of relevance & authority, it will be harder to rank

General Rules To Follow:

  • Don’t go too narrow that you box yourself in
  • Don’t go too broad that you lose topical relevance
  • Find a happy medium, but sometimes more niche is OK!

Keyword Sampling Guidelines
Can you easily find 10 long tail keywords that get over 1,000 searchesper month?1. Look at the first page of Google to determine if the keyword is lowcompetition.
Do you believe this “sampling” proves there are more great keywordsto be found? No = find a different nicheYes = Proceed!
Use the right tools to speed up the process.

Judging Your Competition – things to look for

  • At least two sites with a DR (Ahrefs) /DA (Moz) of 30 or below
  • Low number of referring domains
  • At least 2 sites in top 10
  • UR (Ahrefs) of 20 or Below/PA of 30 (Moz) or Below
  • Keyword Sampling Recap
  • More than 1,000 searches per month
  • More than 3 words long
  • At least 2 sites on the first page of Google are “weak”
  • Low links to Page and Domain is ideal

Use The Right Tools

Here is a list of both free and paid tools that we recommend to help youwith this process:
Free Tools to Utilize When Finding Keywords

  • (Daily Limits)
  • (Chrome Extension)
  • Keywords Everywhere (Chrome Extension)
  • Google Keyword Planner
  • Moz Link Explorer (Helpful to rate competitor DA or Domain
  • Authority)
  • Moz Bar (Chrome Extension that does the same as Link Explorer)

Paid Tools For Keyword Research

  • LongTailPro
  • – Find Keywords & Analyze DR (Domain Rating = Authority)
  • (Paid Plan)

Find Your Doppelgangers
What is a Doppelganger Site?

  1. • Sites that rank for the same keywords you plan to target
  2. • May not visually look the same as yours – but have similar content
  3. • Should appeal to the same audience as your site

Example: A solid doppelganger site for wouldbe, which has relatively low domain authority, and ranksfor many rare coin keywords, which are a primary focus of our site as well.Though the site doesn’t visually look like ours, it does focus on a verysimilar audience:

Tools You’ll Need
You’ll want at least one of these tools to find Doppelgangers:

  • (Trial or paid version)
  • Moz Link Explorer (Free Version)
  • Moz Bar (Free Chrome Plugin)
  • SEMRush (Free or Paid Version)

Metrics You’ll Pay Attention To:• Ahrefs DR (Domain Rating) Measures Strength of Domain in Ahrefs -(ideally looking for sites with DR under 30)• Moz DA (Domain Authority) Measures Domain Strength (ideallylooking for sites with DA under 30)• Organic Keywords for Doppelganger sites in Ahrefs or SEMRush(multiple sites with 10,000+ organic visitors is ideal)• Google Sheets (document your findings to judge competition)

How To Analyze Your Doppelgangers with Ahrefs

Simply type in a competing domain to the Ahrefs site explorer and checkout their domain metrics. Below is which would fitthe criteria we’re looking for – since the DR is only 4.8, which is easily below30. We can also see the organic traffic estimate is 40.4K, which is 4X morethan the 10,000 organic visitor baseline we recommend. Also, the upward trend of organic traffic is a nice sign, showing that growthis happening for other sites in side this niche:To find even more doppelgangers, click on “Competing Domains” in the leftmenu and you’ll see a list of similar sites based on the keywords they havein common:From here, you can click on those competitors to view their domain ratingand other metrics to confirm whether or not they are a true doppelgangersite for you.How To Find Your Doppelgangers With Moz + SEMRush

SEMRush is another fantastic tool for finding competitors anddoppelganger sites. To make sure you’re looking at sites with low authority, simply install the free MozBar Chrome extension from and youcan get the Domain Authority (DA) of any site you visit. You can also get amore indepth look using their Open Site Explorer tool, which gives you afew free searches per day.

Here’s a look at Coinancials:
Once we know it’s DA is under 30, we’d pull it up in SEMRush:Seeing an organic traffic estimate above 10,000 per month is a goodbaseline number to look for – and a higher number is always better. To get these results in SEMRush, simply start by pasting the URL of thecompeting site into the search field. You’ll see a domain summary, including traffic and keyword rankingestimates as shown above. Then, click on “Organic Research” and then “Competitors” to view a list ofcompeting domains, sorted by how similar they are:Further Analyzing DoppelgangersNow that you know how to find dozens, if not hundreds of potentialcompeting sites – here’s how to analyze them.

1. Find Multiple Sites With 10K+ Organic Traffic – This is importantbecause it shows that a variety of sites are seeing success in the niche, which usually means there is room for more (you!). 10,000 organic visitorsper month is an arbitrary number, but these estimates tend to be low, whichmeans the sites are likely doing even better.
2. Uncover More Keywords – Make sure to keep a record in yourspreadsheet of these doppelganger sites. Once you decide on a niche, they will be a great source of keyword opportunities for your site. You cancome bag and dig deeper to see exactly what they are ranking for, andwhich keywords you can and should target for your own site.Doppelganger Recap
Here are the key takeaways from this lesson:• Find sites that look like yours, in your niche• Log each site in a tracking spreadsheet• Analyze DR/DA of Doppelgangers and document authority• If lower competition with high traffic exists = validated niche• Review keywords for each competitor site and uncover new keywords• Continue with validated niche + profit!
